King James Version:

(John 8:26)  I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him.

(John 8:27)  They understood not that he spake to them of the Father.

(John 8:28)  Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am [he], and [that] I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.

(John 8:29)  And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.

(John 8:30)  As he spake these words, many believed on him.

My Translation:

(8:26) I have many things to say and to judge concerning you; indeed the one sending me is true and as for me what I have heard from Him these things I speak in the world.

(8:27) They did not know that He spoke to them of the Father.

(8:28) Therefore Jesus said to them “When you shall have lifted up the Son of Man then you shall know for I am He, and from myself I do nothing but according to what My Father has taught Me these things I speak.

(8:29) And He who sent Me is with Me; the Father did not leave Me alone because I always do the things that are pleasing to Him.

(8:30) While He was speaking these things many believed on Him.

John 8:26-30 “The reasoning of Jesus”

Introduction:  Jesus tries to reason with the Pharisees about who He is.  He concludes that they will know Him only after they have crucified Him.  According to the Bible account of the events of His death many of the priests and of the people believed in Him after the vale of the Temple was rent and Jesus had died. On the day of Pentecost 3000 would believe in Him. Thousands more would believe not long after that. When they heard the testimony of the men who guarded the tomb of Jesus the religious leaders knew that Jesus had risen from the grave.

(John 8:26)  I

(Jesus and all that He is, the light of the world, the water of life, the bread from heaven, the way, the truth and the life, the king of kings.)

have many things to say and to judge of you:

Why “many” things?  Is it because they are so ill informed?  Is it because they have never studied the scriptures?  Will Jesus have to take them from the basics and tell them everything? Or is it because their sins are so many that He has many things to say and to Judge concerning them?  Is it because their sins are so great and awful such as trying to kill the Son of God that He has many things to say and to judge concerning them?  It is one thing to mistreat and abuse your fellow man who is made in the image of God and quite another to beat, spit upon and crucify the very Son of God!

(His Father has a whole list of judgmental things He wants these people to hear.

Mat 23:13  But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in [yourselves], neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.

Mat 23:14  Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.

Mat 23:15  Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.

Mat 23:16  Woe unto you, [ye] blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!

Mat 23:17  [Ye] fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?

Mat 23:18  And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.

Mat 23:19  [Ye] fools and blind: for whether [is] greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?

Mat 23:23  Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier [matters] of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

Mat 23:24  [Ye] blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.

Mat 23:25  Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.

Mat 23:27  Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead [men's] bones, and of all uncleanness.

Mat 23:28  Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

Matt 23:29  Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous, (30)  And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. (31)  Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets. (32)  Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers. (33)  [Ye] serpents, [ye] generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell? (34)  Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and [some] of them ye shall kill and crucify; and [some] of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute [them] from city to city: )

but he that sent me

(God the Father who sent also the prophets of old)

is true

(every word of every prophet was true and all that Jesus would say was true.  These people had heard enough lies and had taught enough untruth)

; and I speak to the world

(Jesus message is for everyone no exceptions)

those things which I have heard of him.

(Jesus is the perfect servant for He does nothing outside the fathers biding)

(John 8:27)  They understood not that he spake to them of the Father.

(There seems to be very little that these men understand.  They do not understand the concept of the trinity. They do not understand things that they cannot.  Jesus told Nicodemus that one must be born again in order to understand the kingdom.)

(John 8:28)  Then said Jesus unto them,

(Jesus does not give up on them but continues to reason with them.)

When ye have lifted up the Son of man,

(these very men will the ones who will cry “crucify Him, crucify Him.” These men will be responsible for the death of Jesus yet Jesus still tries to reason with them to get them to see the truth.)

then shall ye know that I am [he],

(They will know who He is.  They would ask Jesus for a sign and He would say to them that an evil and adulterous generation seeketh a sign but none shall be given to it but the sign of Jonah.  For as Jonah was in the belly of the whale three days and three nights so shall the son of man be in the heart of the earth. The word for “that” might have been better translated for or because. These things will happen to him because he is the Son of God. )

(I believe that the word “he” is well supplied here for the implication is that Jesus is the Christ. The reason they would know is because Jesus is the Christ.  The Christ was foretold by the prophets to be crucified and yet rise again.)

and [that] I do nothing of myself;

(not only does he speak the things the Father gives Him to say but he also does the things His Father gives Him to do and nothing more.)

but as my Father hath taught me,

(the father taught or showed Him the things he was to do. He followed completely the Father’s instructions. )

I speak these things.

(The Father has not hid from the son anything.  Jesus knew full well that the Father was sending Him into the world to die for the sins of men.)

(John 8:29)  And he that sent me is with me:

(these men could not see anyone with Jesus.  They saw the disciples but none of them was the Father.  They could not see the Father.  Even Jesus’ disciples said show us the Father to which He responded “if you have seen me you have seen the Father for I and the Father are one.”)

the Father hath not left me alone;

(The father is always with the son.  He would never leave Him alone.)

for I do always those things that please him.

(He always did what pleased the Father.  The Father requires a perfect sacrifice for out sins.  A completely innocent one must die for the guilty.)

(John 8:30)  As he spake these words, many believed on him.

(even while He was speaking the Holy Spirit was convicting the hearts of men. Many is the opposite of few.  Many believed the words of Jesus.  They recognized by the aid of the Holy Spirit the truth of God’s word. Jesus knew that some men are willing to be reasonable.  They will carefully weigh the evidence set before them and will come to a reasonable conclusion.  Men can not be saved without God providing Himself a sacrifice.  God the Father is here and God the Son is hear and God the Holy Spirit is here.  God longs to save the souls of men.  He is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
