Matthew 7:24-27 The
Right Foundation for Building a Life
Introduction: This is a part
of the invitation to the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus compares the building of a
house to the building of a life. Strangely, He never mentions the material nor
the plans, but only the foundation. Not that the others are unimportant, but
the foundation is most important.
I. Jesus said that whoever “doeth these
sayings of mine” is like the man who builds his house on the rock.
A. “These sayings” refer specifically to the Sermon on
the Mount.
1. If
He was to make such a statement today He would include all of the New
Testament, but the
New
Testament was not written at that time.
2.
Thus He spoke only of the sayings of the Sermon on the Mount.
3.
Note: Matthew 7:13-14; 7:7; 7:1-2; 6:9-13; 6:1; 5:44; 5:16.
B. If any man do
these sayings.
1. If
he enter the strait gate and get saved.
2. If
he pray, forgive, do not judge harshly, does good to
those who mistreat him, give, etc.
C. This man is like one who builds on a rock.
(When the storms of life come his house will
stand because of foundation.)
D. Note:
1. Being saved and living right does not
prevent the storms of life from coming. (Does not
prevent
the rains, floods, nor winds. Does not prevent problems, sickness, death,
tears,
persecution, sorrows, etc. These
live the victorious life in spite of the storms.)
2. But
being saved and living right does mean that one will not be totally defeated.
Matthew 5:3-12.
3. It
also means that he will not be put down in the judgment which comes after
death.
II. Jesus said that whoever does
not do those sayings is like the man who built his house on the sand.
A. This man does
not get saved, does not have a yielded prayer life, does not do the other
things
commanded.
B. He builds a
house that may be as fine or finer than the house of the saved. (The unsaved
often have
more material things
and sometimes more fun and pleasure than the saved.)
C. Storms of life
will come and destroy.
1. The
sand foundation will wash right out from under this house.
2.
With the foundation gone the winds and water can easily destroy it.
3.
When sickness, sorrows, trials, testings come that man has no foundation
that will support.
4. He
will fall and be unable to arise.
5.
Most important, in the judgment after death, he will be swept off into
the pit of hell.
Conclusion: 1. It is too late to put a foundation under the house after the
storm has done hit.
2. Trust Jesus now.
3. Start now living your life for Jesus.
